First Porcus air scrubber by Big Dutchman in Italy
In March 2021 our parent company Big dutchman recieved delivery of the first Porcus air scrubber on behalf of their customer Marco Merlo in Italy.
A complete climate and feeding concept
Marco is the owner of a sow farm near Treviso which is home to around 2400 sows at the moment. His intention in the future is to grow the herd up to 3500. He inititally chose Big Dutchman as the supplier for his electronic sow feeding stations. His intention, to improve animal welfare conditions in the farm and ESF stations were a good fit in this plan. The team installed 12 Callmatic 2.5 stations in the new gestation house and 6 in the new quarantene building for gilts, which will host around 400 animals.
Top house climate
With regards to house climate a fully equipped ventilation system was installed consisting of Cl-1911 wall inlets, connection chimneys to central exhaust central channel. At the end of the exhaust channel D-920 chimneys push air into the air scrubber pressure chamber. The system also uses nozzle cooling for the warm periods. The whole system is controlled by 307Pro climate computers.
….and then of course the Porcus air scrubber.
Porcus biology to reduce smell
For the new sow, building Marco felt it was important to install an air scrubber system to reduce the amount of odour smell from the farm. For this, he chose the Big Dutchman Porcus module. This biological system uses bacteria growing in the wash water to reduce ammonia, odour and dust to the level specified in the Dutch BWL2008.01.V3 certification. A major advantage is that it is factory built and fully tested before being shipped to location. Installation is then very fast and virtually plug and play. In this case, set up and site testing only took a couple of days.
Self-regulation and low maintenance
Another important deciding factor in the choice of the Porcus was the ability of the system to self-regulate, maintaining the nitrogen concentrations and PH levels that ensure the quality of the wash water. This is important for performance and to maintain a level of air cleaning that will keep the odour to a minimum. The other benefit of the system’s ability to self-monitor means low maintenance for the farmer and his staff. The wastewater is also managed automatically. It is sent to a storage tank when concentration rise and is replaced with fresh water when necessary.
