Big Dutchman’s first customer for pig and compost air scrubbing in Japan
The customer site is located in the province of Gunma Prefecture, and home to sows, piglets and finisher pigs with a manure treatment facility center. The decision to install air scrubbing was on the recommendation of Big Dutchman and their partners Fuij-kasei. The customer agreed it would be a good move to include in the permit application, as there is a village quite close to the site where odour could become an issue. As part of the proposal, Big Dutchman offered a complete housing and climate concept that included penning and flooring.
Once the proposal had been made, the customer decided to give the green on the project because apart from a proposal that fitted with the plans, the long-standing relationship with Fuji-kasei gave the customer faith they would complete the project successfully. With regards to air emissions systems, 11 Porcus biological air scrubbers were ordered and one CompoTower airscubber ‘designed’ for the Big Dutchman CompoTower, but in this case connected to a Chubu Ecotech. All equipment was installed by Fuji-kasei.
Porcus biological air scrubber
For this project, we recommended the Big Dutchman Porcus, which uses bacteria grown in the wash water to reduce ammonia, odour and dust to a standard set out in the Dutch BWL2008.01.V3 certificate. A big benefit of this system is that it is built and fully tested in the factory before being shipped to location. The installation is then plug and play and can be completed very fast. In this case, however additional chimney sections were also shipped and assembled on top of the modules by our engineers. The result, a design that met the emission requirements for this project, allowing the correct dispersal of air beyond the local environment. Therefore avoiding smells in the village.

Results
Over one year since installation, ammonia levels have been tested with some very encouraging results. The Porcus air scrubbers reaching ammonia reductions of up to 76% and the Composting air scrubber reducing by 96%. We believe these numbers will get even better as farm workers get more experience at maintaining the technology to its optimal performance. One of the points we picked up was the need to include a cleaning unit that up until this project had not been part of our standard package. This was part of the learning processes for Inno+ as we branch out globally and start appreciate the challenges our customer and dealers have in the field and how they maintain our equipment.
The customer also told our colleagues on the last visit, that they were very satisfied with the reduced levels of odour on and around the site. With no complaints so far.
Composting
As already mentioned, this site like many in Japan treats the manure produced in a composting center. As we discovered in later testing, we proved the process was producing 325ppms of ammonia. This is clearly no good for the environment or human health. We therefore installed the Inno+ CompoTower air scrubber to reduce these levels, with dramatic results. After scrubbing, we registered levels of 10ppm, which is a reduction of 96%. The CompoTower air scrubber is a relatively new product in the Big Dutchman catalogue, clearly a solution that can greatly assist producers reduce emission, gain their Green label and open the door for further expansion.
