Optimal climate control for calf barn in South Korea

Extreme climate calls for smart climate control

In Eumseong-gun, South Korea, a new calf barn was built to house 80 calves weighing between 35 and 60 kg. The calves stay in individual pens for about one month. A stable barn climate is essential for healthy growth, with a target temperature of 18°C and a relative humidity of approximately 60%.

However, the climatic conditions in the region make this challenging. The outside temperature varies from -20°C in winter to 37°C in summer. In addition, the 700 W heat lamps per pen produce a considerable amount of extra heat in the barn.

The customer was therefore looking for a solution that could both heat and cool, so that the incoming ventilation air could be brought to the right temperature under all conditions. The system also had to fit within the existing barn structure.

To ensure a stable and healthy stable climate, Inno+ supplied a combination of the InnoHeat and InnoCool concepts. Because there are no air scrubbers in this stable and none are being installed, a reversible heat pump was chosen.

This heat pump can both heat and cool, depending on the outside temperature and the climate requirements in the barn. During cold periods, the system heats the incoming ventilation air, while during warm periods it can actively cool.

The design takes into account the internal heat load of the heat lamps in the calf pens. This keeps the barn climate stable and ensures that the ventilation air is always brought into the barn at the right temperature.

A stable and healthy barn climate, all year round

With the installation of the reversible heat pump, the calf barn has a controlled barn climate all year round. Fresh ventilation air is continuously brought to the desired temperature before it enters the barn.

This ensures optimal conditions for young calves, with a stable temperature and good air quality. At the same time, the system offers an energy-efficient solution for both heating and cooling, fully integrated within the existing barn structure.
