INDICO cooling system for innovative pig farm in South Korea
Seolbong Farms is a unique pig farm in South Korea, consisting of two different farms located in different regions. One farm specialises in housing sows, while the other focuses on finishing pigs. On both farms, the sheds are constructed in 2-storeys. In South Korea, land is extremely expensive and scarce, so storey houses are used more often. Both farms (sows and meat pigs) are equipped with the INDICO cooling system.
The sow farm on one site
On the first site, a two-storey sow farm has been built. The bottom floor houses boars and gestating sows, while the top floor houses farrowing sows.
The heat exchangers in the air inlets are provided per floor and the cooling is also regulated per floor by the Inno+ control system. A total of 6 centrally located cooling machines of 125 kW cooling each have been installed (total 750 kW cooling capacity). Under all weather conditions in summer, the incoming air is always cooled down to 18°C. Besides cooling, the air is also dehumidified. An incoming air temperature of 18°C ensures that the room temperature never exceeds 25°C. This means that under tropical outdoor conditions, the animals no longer experience heat stress year-round and therefore production can be greatly increased because the climate is no longer a limiting factor. To achieve the highest possible efficiency, we collaborated with Big Dutchman Asia, which supplied and installed the ventilation system.
Thanks to the INDICO cooling system, the sows, boars and piglets live in a pleasant environment. This is good for their welfare and it ensures better production results.
Fattening pigs on the other site
The new fattening pig house is also designed as a 2-storey house. The air enters the house on both ends and is also cooled there via air/water heat exchangers in the incoming air. The cooling makes it possible to ventilate a maximum of 50 m3/hour per meat pig under these tropical conditions.
A total of 12 centrally located cooling machines of 125 kW cooling each have been installed (total cooling capacity of 1,500 kW). Per end wall, 10 air/water heat exchangers of 8,000 m3/hour each have been installed. In total, a maximum of 160,000 m3/hour is ventilated in the barn. Without INDICO cooling, this would have been at least 2 to 3 times more.
The electrical energy consumption of the houses is higher than houses without INDICO-cooling systems (electricity needed for cooling machines and pumps), but production is so much higher that the extra investment in electricity costs is more than recouped from the technical results (reduced feed conversion, reduced mortality, higher growth, fewer fertility problems and longer life of the animals).
Seolbong Farms represents an innovative approach to keeping animals on two sites. With our advanced INDICO systems, we have optimised the environment for the animals for both animal welfare and operational efficiency. Our dedication to overcoming unique challenges on every farm and in every part of the world demonstrates our commitment to delivering first-class solutions in agricultural technology.
